Description
A condition in which the hormone insulin, which is produced by the pancreas, is
either in inadequate supply or fails to work effectively. Insulin is essential for the
metabolism of glucose (sugar) and when blood glucose accumulates, this impacts on the
normal metabolic processing of carbohydrates. Insulin production can be affected by
disease processes, or by lifestyle factors such as body weight, dietary intake and
physical activity. An important and increasing health concern, particularly in older
Australian (an estimated 2% have diabetes). |
