Description
Haemochromatosis is a disease of iron storage. When too much iron is absorbed
in the diet than is needed to produce haemoglobin, the excess accumulates in various parts
of the body, including the liver, pancreas, heart and skin. This can result in
hepatomegaly (enlargement of the liver), skin pigmentation, diabetes mellitus, or cardiac
failure.
Haemochromatosis is hereditary, and affects approximately 1 in 300 male or female
people of North European descent. |
