Public
Health Services
Most public health services in Australia, such as hospitals and community
health centres, are
administered by State or
Territory government health departments under
Commonwealth, State and Territory funding agreements.
Services are usually further organised into geographic or
functional regions
or groups.
The Commonwealth government administers national policy and programs
and some service delivery functions such as
general practice. In addition to funding agreements with the States and
Territories, the Commonwealth government also administers direct payment systems such as Medicare
rebates for professional services and the
Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme which supports access to medicines.
